Can I reverse my exemption from compulsory pension insurance?

Last updated: · under the rules from 1 January 2027 · Publisher: INTERNA · responsible: Marc A. Schnitzler, in mortgage financing since 2005

Yes, since 1 July 2026 you can do this once in your mini-job (Minijob, a small job with a low wage). You hand in a written application to your employer, and from the following month you pay into the pension insurance again. The decision is final: you cannot get yourself exempted again for this job afterwards.

How to do it

  1. Hand in the application to cancel the exemption in writing to your employer. A form is available from the Minijob-Zentrale, the central office for mini-jobs.
  2. Your employer reports the change to the Minijob-Zentrale.
  3. From the first day of the following month, your share of 3.6% is deducted. It does not work backwards.
  4. From 2027, take out a subsidised contract and pay in at least €120 a year, or €150 a month for the full subsidy.

What you should know first

  • The subsidy is only paid for contributions from 1 January 2027: If you cancel the exemption earlier, you already pay 3.6% before then and do not get any subsidy for it yet. If you apply in December 2026, compulsory pension insurance applies from January 2027.
  • Cannot be reversed: The cancellation applies for as long as this mini-job lasts. If you have several mini-jobs at the same time, it applies to all of them.
  • Less money in your account: €22.79 a month with a wage of €633, €14.40 with €400.
  • Check other benefits: BAföG (state financial support for students), family health insurance (Familienversicherung) and other benefits have their own rules. The subsidy does not change these rules.

The calculation in one sentence

If you cancel the exemption with a wage of €633, you pay €273.46 a year into the pension insurance and in return can get up to €540 subsidy a year if you save €150 a month. Under 25 you also get a one-off €200.

The money in the contract is meant for your retirement and your own home. If you have the subsidised savings paid out early, for example by cancelling the contract, you have to pay back the subsidies and tax benefits.
